Community Highlights: Kindness, Culture & Connection

Building a stronger community, one story at a time.

The 10th of January 2026 gathering was a landmark success. More than just an event, it was a "big afternoon out", a vital space for parents to support their mental health while children flourished in a safe, joyful environment.

Special Guest Contribution

We were honoured to welcome our special guest, Serigne Cheikh Diagne. He not only attended the session but also actively took part in all activities. He shared valuable knowledge and helped parents and children develop a deeper understanding of inclusion, culture, and family support. His calm presence, clear explanations, and respectful approach made a strong positive impact on everyone. His contribution meant a great deal to our community, and we are very grateful for his time and support.

Parenting for Inclusion: A Space for Parents

Raising a family between two cultures is a journey best shared. This week's introductory session offered parents a rare chance to step out of the house and connect deeply.

Sharing Wisdom: Bampha shared powerful experiences from years of raising children in the UK and working with youth. Other parents joined in with "enthusiasm, willingness to participate". They discussed their own experiences freely and offered advice.
Mental Health Matters: Many parents noted how beneficial these three hours were for their well-being. It provided a safe space for them to meet and discuss, and to network with other parents on everyday challenges in their households and in society at large.
Navigating Values: We discussed how understanding British customs and values helps to protect and empower our loved ones, whilst at the same time staying rooted in our own heritage to have a bit of both worlds.

Folklore: Lessons in Kindness & Inclusion

All of our storytelling activities this week were centred on Kindness and Inclusion, teaching our children that every voice matters.

Strivers Juniors (5 to 9 years old)

Led by Helen, an experienced and enthusiastic English teacher, this group used folklore to bridge language gaps. Helen's specialised support is helping our young people build confidence in English through fun, traditional stories.

Strivers Explorers & Achievers (10 to 15 years old)

The teamwork in these groups was outstanding! Together, they collaborated and wrote poems about kindness, practising how to include everyone's ideas.

Strivers Leader of the Day: Fatima Conte (13 years old)

Fatima led the group by reading a folktale with clarity and heart. She did not just tell the story; she encouraged other Strivers to reflect on how to be better friends and led creative crafts that brought the message of kindness to life.

🏆 The "Best Listener" Award

The Certificate of the Best Listener celebrates calm concentration, respect, and positive behaviour. Through patience, practice, and gentle guidance, all our children have learned how to listen with focus and care. Today, no one is over-talking, interrupting, or disturbing others. Children wait for their turn, listen to instructions, and show respect to their peers and leaders.

This is a wonderful achievement and shows strong emotional growth, self-control, and confidence. We are very proud of our children for becoming more attentive, kind, and thoughtful listeners. Well done to our winners: Maguet Njie and Ndeye Diouk!

Moments That Melted Our Hearts ❤️

Beyond the planned activities, three special moments showed the true spirit of our community:

  1. The Gift of Patience: One of our Strivers Juniors spent time happily teaching a peer from his group with focus difficulties how to play chess. Seeing them both completely engaging and playing together was a beautiful example of inclusion in action.
  2. The Literacy Spark: In perhaps the biggest achievement of the day, one of our Strivers Juniors asked to take a book home to read for the first time! This spark of curiosity has inspired us: it is now time to widen our beautiful little library for our Strivers!
  3. New Friendships: Two Strivers Achievers made new friendships by playing together, sharing happy moments, and supporting one another with kindness and respect. They spoke with enthusiasm about the beauty of poetry and demonstrated how much they enjoy reading, listening, and learning together.
