Children celebrating diversity through storytelling and creative expression
Being a self-published children's book author of African origins has been both exciting and challenging. When I first started, I knew I wanted to write stories that celebrate diversity and representation—stories that remind children, especially those often underrepresented in modern literature, that they are seen, valued, and loved for who they are.
"The message is universal, but the main characters are those underrepresented."
Yet the truth is, the journey hasn't been easy, especially when it comes to gaining exposure. Self-publishing gave me the freedom to share my message, but it also came with struggles. It meant navigating the publishing world largely on my own while carrying the responsibility of telling stories that matter.
At times, I wondered if my message was reaching the children who needed it most, or if my voice was strong enough to make an impact. There were definitely moments of doubt—moments when I wondered if my voice mattered, and moments when I questioned if I could truly make a difference.
The Weight of Representation
Carrying the weight of representation and trying to bring more inclusivity into children's literature often felt like a big responsibility. It's not just about writing a good story—it's about ensuring that children who rarely see themselves in books finally have characters they can identify with, cultures they recognize, and experiences that validate their own.
"Stories can do more than entertain—they can break barriers, bring people together, and inspire the next generation to embrace who they are."
Finding My Community
That is why joining Striving for Inclusion has been such an important step for me. This organization has not only welcomed me but also helped me grow in confidence as a writer and as a person. Through their support, I've had the chance to interact more with children, be more active in the community, and see the difference my books can make in young lives.
Community Connection
Connecting with other authors and advocates who share the same mission of inclusive representation.
Direct Impact
Seeing firsthand how inclusive stories touch children's lives and boost their confidence.
Most importantly, Striving for Inclusion reminded me that I am not alone. There are others who share the same mission of making sure every child feels represented and included. Their encouragement has helped me to keep going, to keep writing, and to believe that my words matter.
The Power of Inclusive Storytelling
As a self-published author, being part of this community has shown me that stories can do more than entertain—they can break barriers, bring people together, and inspire the next generation to embrace who they are. Every book becomes a bridge between cultures, a mirror for children who need to see themselves, and a window for those learning about others.
A Message of Gratitude
For every parent seeking diverse books for their children, every educator building inclusive libraries, and every organization like Striving for Inclusion that creates spaces where all voices matter—thank you. Your support transforms individual dreams into collective change.
The journey of self-publishing as an author committed to representation continues to have its challenges, but it also brings immense joy. When a child sees themselves reflected in a story, when a parent finds books that celebrate their family's heritage, when teachers have resources that truly include all their students—these moments make every struggle worthwhile.
And for that transformation, for that sense of purpose and community, I will always be grateful to Striving for Inclusion and everyone who believes in the power of inclusive storytelling.
