Welcome to S.F.I. Senegal: Where Every Parent Finds Their Voice and Every Child Belongs
Are you a parent in Senegal raising a child with a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND)? Sometimes, you feel confused about where to turn or are misinterpreted. You are heard at Striving for Inclusion (S.F.I.). You are not alone.
Breaking the Silence: Your Child's Unique Skills Are Gifts
Families with children who learn, move, or speak differently sometimes struggle in Senegal. From negotiating schools to handling social stigma, the path can seem daunting. We therefore developed S.F.I., a dynamic community committed to creating a Senegal where every child with SEND is understood, supported, and belongs and where their families feel confident, proud, and powerful.
Our Partners in Inclusion: You
More than merely an organisation, Striving for Inclusion (S.F.I.) is a movement motivated by families, teachers, and community leaders in Senegal. Our main priorities include helping children with various challenges, including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, learning difficulties and disabilities, developmental delays, and other extra demands.
Our Mission
Our straightforward goal is establishing a safe environment where families feel heard, valued, and empowered. We interact directly with parents, coordinate with teachers, and engage with nearby communities to increase awareness, provide practical training and support inclusive policies.
How Do We Empower Communities and Families?
Real change comes from, on one hand, families who feel supported and, on the other hand, communities that know what SEND is about. S.F.I. makes a daily difference as follows:
1. Actual Support for Families
Imagine a place where you could discuss your challenges and victories freely and without judgment. That is our offering. We offer active listening sessions, support, guidance, advice, and group discussions for parents and carers of SEND children.
"I used to hesitate to share about my daughter's autism. But right now, I feel proud. Thanks to S.F.I." - A Dakar mom finding support in our community
2. Destroying Obstacles by Raising Community Knowledge
Many Senegalese communities still struggle significantly with stigma around disabilities. We consciously try to dismantle it by planning strong awareness campaigns that highlight every child's potential.
- Visiting community centres and local schools
- Sharing inspirational stories
- Challenging outdated beliefs
3. Promoting Inclusive Learning
Many schools in Senegal are not yet prepared to accommodate children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. We are on the front lines, advocating for:
- Easy-to-use, modified resources
- Essential teacher training
- Inclusive school rules
4. Releasing Parent Power
The most effective champions for children are their parents. We aim to equip parents with the courage and tools to advocate for positive change, speak out, and share their experiences and concerns.
Why This Matters: Our Shared Vision for Senegal
Children with SEND are sometimes misinterpreted, and their families may suffer from extreme isolation or judgment. Parents shouldn't have to hide their child or feel guilty about their child's situation. This must change; we are taking that burden.
At S.F.I., we believe:
Join Us: Be Part of an Inclusive Future
We aspire to a Senegal where:
Supported Parents
SEND parents feel supported rather than judged
Inclusive Schools
Schools embrace and accommodate every student with enthusiasm
Celebrating Communities
Communities celebrate all aspects of difference with enthusiasm
